Laura Roberts  > Photography > 52-Week Challenge > Week 2 -- 80's Music
Song title, album title, or artist...and guess it could be spawned off the lyrics of the 80s, too. Before I could begin, I had to find out what the music of the 80s included. After all these decades, the years run together. Most of the songs and artists didn't even ring a bell.

I'll be out of town five of the seven days. While volunteering at a monastery in southern Indiana, I'll be converting old audio tapes to MP3s. The editing skills are not part of my repertoire, but they said they'd train me. While I'm there, doubt there'll be much time or photo ops that represent this era's music. May not come up with the dozen I'd hoped to capture each week. Actually, I make the rules for my own Smug gallery, so may continue adding until I reach that number. When I made my selection to be posted on the ETown Smug site, I only had five pictures. At that point, had a tough time deciding between the wall and the conversation hearts.

Laura Roberts > Candle in the Wind was recorded by Elton John and has been revered by fans during several decades. Originally released in 1973, a live version with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra was released in 1986, and in 1997 he recorded a version dedicated to Princess Diana after she was killed in a car accident. Elton also dedicated the song to Ryan White, a child who died from AIDS the next day, when he sang it at Farm Aid IV in 1990.

I used CS6's Smudge Tool to make it look as if the flame was blowing in the wind. The song actually is more about the wind blowing the candle out, but an unlit candle didn't make a good photo. I learned that if I intend to move pixels with that tool, it would be better for the background to be plain.
Laura Roberts > Red Red Wine, released by UB40 in 1983...Written and released earlier by Neil Diamond, the song didn't hit the top of the charts in the States until UB40's version did in 1988. The song began with "Red red wine, you make me feel so fine. You keep me rocking all of the time."

These weekly challenges give me a chance to play. This time I experimented with Lightroom's graduated filter. I'd used it before to correct exposure, but this time I used it to add an effect to a correctly exposed shot. I made the bottle side darker and the glass side lighter. I also used the Shadows slider to make the shadows more pronounced.

This is my favorite cheap red wine, Charles Shaw Merlot from Trader Joe's. It was formerly known, and sometimes still is, as "two buck chuck." It's a little more now, but still a good value. It's less expensive if you buy it by the case, which I do. If you're wondering, I did enjoy that glass of wine after loading the picture. I'm not a big drinker and that's twice the amount of wine I normally drink, so perhaps I ended up a little loaded, too.
Laura Roberts > Angel, released by Madonna in 1985...Madonna was not only the artist, but one of the writers. It was a song on her "Like a Virgin" album. Madonna said she was inspired by a girl who was saved by an angel and then falls in love with him. Even though the song reached the top of the dance charts, critics gave it mixed reviews.

The angel was another of my finds. Several years ago, it was left over after the St. Vincent Mission's Christmas Store event, I don't remember what I paid for it, but whatever it was went to help a needy family in that area. The backdrop is a piece of fabric stretched over foam core. The "cloud" started with a snow-cover blanket normally used around my Christmas tree. With a soft brush and reduced opacity, I cloned the edge to look more cloud like. A faint white vignette was added with Lightroom.
Laura Roberts > Another Brick in the Wall, released by Pink Floyd in the late seventies ...This is the title of three songs by an English rock band founded in 1965. Part II was on the List of #1 Singles of 1980 (March 22, March 29, April 5, and April 12). Each of the three songs has a similar tune and lyrical structure (but the only repeated lyrics are "all in all"). Each part gets louder and more enraged, rising from sadness, to protesting, to being furious. The writer of Part II was Roger Waters. This song contains his view of formal education. He hated his elementary teachers. He thought they were more into keeping kids quiet, than teaching them. The wall Waters refers to is the wall he built around himself because he wasn't in touch with reality. The bricks were events in his life which propelled him to build the "wall" and the teachers were another brick in it. The characters of the Pink Floyd band changed over the years.

The campus buildings of Saint Meinrad Archabbey and School of Theology are mainly made of sandstone. There is only one building (I know of) made of red brick and they are getting ready to demolish it. The student-run pub in this building is called the “UnStable.” It's known for its pizza, burgers, and beer and is open most evenings. This is a picture of one of its walls.
Laura Roberts > Yellow Roses, released by Dolly Parton in 1989...These roses look a little worn around the edges, sort of like the relationship Dolly sings about in the song. To paraphrase it, "You used to love me, so are you now sending my yellow rosebuds to your new love? I still love you anyway." Ladies, we need to have a talk with that woman!

These roses were in front of a statue in the monastery church. The arrangement was too high for me to use the viewfinder eyepiece to frame the picture, so I turned on the seldom-used, live-view feature of my Canon 50D. It took several tries.
Laura Roberts > Every Rose Has Its Thorn, recorded by Poison in 1988...This was the band's only #1 hit in the United States. Poison is a glam-metal band...whatever that is. Even though I can't define it, I'm sure it is not my style of music. Perhaps this is one of their tamer songs, as it was referred to as an acoustic ballad.

The roses came in a planter sent from an acquaintance long ago, to wish me a good year on the first day of school. I looked at some real roses at the store tonight, but saw they'd either been de-thorned or were bred to not have any. You can tell it's been a long time since anyone has sent me roses. Actually, just one would do. Hint, Hint!

I'm learning to use Photoshop (CS6) and had to doctor the rose on the right. The thorn was really there, but the flower was smashed. I also tried to render it as an oil painting, but other than the canvas it doesn't look like one to me.
Laura Roberts > Tell It to My Heart, recorded by Taylor Dayne in 1987...It was the first single from her debut album. She soon became known for her up-tempo, dance-oriented music. Dayne was nominated for a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal, Female for her performance.

The dish the hearts are in is the bottom of a butter dish from back in the days when you made your own and molded it with a round, wooden mold. It belonged to my paternal great-grandmother, Laura Wyatt Smith.

The hearts are not candy. The words on the candy ones weren't visible enough...these are also bigger. They were on an inexpensive necklace that I cut apart. I could have healed the holes in the few that show, but didn't think about it. Oh, well.
Candle in the Wind was recorded by Elton John and has been revered by fans during several decades.
